TV ‘Superman’ George Reeves Still Haunts Home Where He Died

Standing proud for more than 600 years, the magnificent spectacle of Lumley Castle dominates the County Durham landscape. Surrounded by stunning parklands overlooking the River Wear, it is a magnificent monument to a bygone age of chivalry and honor.

Paranormal Activity

The ‘Lily Of Lumley’, as the lady is also known, was killed by several monks after refusing to agree with their religious beliefs. When Sir Ralph discovered what had happened to his wife he had the monks executed. The monks are sometimes seen walking in file around the area of the castle, while Lady Lumley walks within the castle’s corridors and grounds.

An Australian cricket player reported seeing the monks in 2005.The touring Australian cricket team was said to have been haunted during their stay at Lumley Castle. Shane Watson got so spooked that he slept on the floor of teammate Brett Lee’s room.

Even the Australia media officer Belinda Dennett said: “Several of the players were uneasy although a lot of them in the morning said they were fine.”
Australia are not the only cricket team to be spooked by the spectre. In 2000, three members of the West Indian cricket team, including Captain Jimmy Adams, checked out of the same hotel because they were scared. These days the medieval atmosphere is enhanced by the staff dressing in period costume.

Built in around 1145 over a 5000 year old pagan burial ground, The Ancient Ram Inn is the oldest building in Wotton-Under-Edge. No wonder this building is a National Treasure.

Life at the Ram started in the early 11th century but not much is known before 1145.  From 1145 it was a Church House for an unknown period. The time between 1145 and 1350 is a little speculative but the known facts are; Predominantly a Church House, Housed Masons for constructing the near-by St. Mary’s Church and possibly housed Slaves and/or children for the same purpose.

In 1350 The Ram (not know by that name yet) was bought by Maurice De Bathe. Tenants Peter Le Couk and his wife Margaret resided there for an unknown period. The property stayed in the name of Maurice De Bathe for 171 years. The Ram changed hands frequently from here right up to 1968 where the current owner John Humphries now resides along side many uninvited guests. Most of which are previous owners or visitors!

From 1350 to 1820 it was known mostly as “Tan House” or “The Tan House” but records show the name “The Old Sun” crop up a few times but details of when it may have been known as this so far remains unknown. From 1820 onwards the Ram was Brewery Property with various Brewers and Landlords.

Paranormal Activity

The Ancient Ram Inn possesses a genuinely chilling aura, and a reputation that is so menacing that many local people won’t even walk past it at night. The building is thought to date from around 1145, and it has been suggested that the workmen who built the parish church opposite were lodged here. It served for a time as a priest’s house before converting to an inn. Its last pint was pulled in 1968. Once it had closed for business John Humphries, who is now the sole living occupant, purchased the building from the brewery. He has been battling to save the structure ever since, irrespective of the endeavors by former residents to interfere as much as possible.

The moment you enter the old inn, an aura of dreadful foreboding envelopes you. The bare walls, creaking floorboards, steep stairs and mysterious shadows are sufficient to elicit the coldest of shivers; whilst the legions of ghost stories that come marching from its mist-shrouded past can chill the blood of even the most steadfast cynic. “The atmosphere was awful,” is how one visitor put it, “I can only describe it as pure filth…dark and heavy.”

The first room that visitors encounter is the “Men s Kitchen”. This reputedly stands on the site of a pagan burial ground, and the disturbing sound of a baby crying is often heard here. People ascending the steep staircase up to the first floor have been thrown up the stairs by invisible hands. A photograph taken here in June 1999 showed a mysterious white mist, about the height of a human, ascending the staircase.
